Hygienic & Easy To Clean
Maple’s naturally smooth, closed-grain surface leaves fewer places for food particles and moisture to hide, making it one of the most hygienic wood choices for cutting boards.
Frequently Asked Questions about Maple Wood Cutting Boards
Yes—maple is a hardwood that hits the sweet spot. It's incredibly durable when cared for and features a closed-grain structure, which makes it naturally safe for food preparation.
It has a tight grain that resists moisture and is a long-time favorite in professional kitchens for its durability and clean look.
Due to its lighter color, maple can stain more easily than some of its darker wood counterparts. Foods rich in pigment — like beets, berries, and tomato sauce — may leave stains if not cleaned off promptly.
The good news? Regular oiling (ideally every 2 to 3 weeks) helps protect your maple board and makes it less susceptible to staining.
Hand wash only! Use warm water and mild soap—harsh soaps with alcohol (like Dawn Powerwash) can strip the wood’s natural oils, causing it to dry out. Towel dry immediately, then prop it up to fully air dry. Maple can dry out faster than other woods. Soaking (or the dreaded dishwasher) can cause it to swell or crack.
Use a food-grade mineral oil to deeply condition your board, allowing it to absorb into the maple’s fine grain and protect the wood from drying out, which helps prevent cracking and warping. For best results, follow with a layer of beeswax after oiling, or choose a mineral oil and beeswax blend for an easy, all-in-one solution. Steer clear of vegetable oils, as they can go rancid and damage the wood.
