The Ultimate Summer Hosting Hack Guide: Less Stress, More Fun

Summer parties, backyard BBQs, Fourth of July spreads: we love them all. But hosting? That part can feel like a lot, and what's the fun of hosting if you can't be a part of the party? We believe the best host is a relaxed host, and with proper planning, that can be you! So we put together this ultimate summer hosting guide to help you pull off an impressive spread without the stress.

The secret? Plan ahead, keep it simple, and let your setup do the work.

📋 Plan Ahead: Do the Work Before the Party Day

The more you prep before the day of the party, the more energy you'll actually have to enjoy it. Here's the golden rule: don't make anything day-of.

The day of your party is for arranging, reheating, and enjoying, not cooking from scratch. Make everything you can in advance. For dishes that can't be fully pre-made (like salads), chop all your veggies the night before. Then all you have to do is toss everything in a big bowl right before guests arrive. Done!

✅ The Summer Party Checklist: Don't Forget These

It happens to every host: you spend hours on the food and forget... the napkins. Or the serving spoon. Or the ice. We've been there.

Here's your go-to list of often-forgotten party essentials:

☐ Extra trash cans (with labels!) so empty cups don't pile up on your serving boards
☐ Serving utensils for every dish that needs one
☐ Assigned bowls or serving trays for each dish, decided ahead of time
☐ Napkins — more than you need
☐ Plates, cups, and extra cups!
☐ Cutlery
☐ Toothpicks or small skewers — especially handy for charcuterie and bite-sized apps
☐ Ice, ice, and extra ice! 🧊
☐ Music! (aka a speaker) 🎵 — this one is huge
☐ Bottle opener and wine key
☐ A designated spot for coats/bags

Pro tip: assign your serving boards and platters to specific dishes the day before. Knowing your XL board is already spoken for as the sandwich station saves so much last-minute scrambling, and makes it easier for anyone who wants to lend a helping hand. Less directing needed from you.

✨ Keep It Simple: Summer Entertaining Tips That Actually Work

Don't overcomplicate your summer party setup. The more you enjoy hosting, the more you'll want to do it again!

Quality over quantity. You don't need to make everything. Pick two or three tried-and-true recipes that always disappear at gatherings and double or triple the batch. Simpler menu, happier host.

Spread your food around the space. You don't need to fit everything on one table. Placing trays of food in different spots around your home or backyard prevents crowding, keeps guests moving, and naturally encourages mingling.

🍉 Seasonal Summer Charcuterie and Serving Board Ideas

Summer is the perfect time to switch up what goes on your boards. A few ideas for warm-weather crowd pleasers:

  • 🍉 Watermelon + feta board with fresh mint
  • 🍅 Caprese board with heirloom tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil
  • 🍓 Summer fruit skewers — they feel festive, look gorgeous on a serving board, and are easy for guests to grab and go

Fruit skewers are an underrated move. They take the same ingredients as a fruit board but feel a little more "party" and a lot more grabbable. Win-win.

🌴 Set Up Self-Serve Food Stations (and Actually Enjoy Your Party)

Self-serve stations are your best friend. Things like drinks and desserts are often set up for guests to grab themselves, but don't stop there! By getting creative with your main dish, you can have your party and enjoy it, too. Choose something that holds up at room temperature, so you can step out of the kitchen and join the fun!

Some of our favorite self-serve main dish ideas:

  • Sandwich station with a large serving board as the base, meats, cheeses, toppings, and bread laid out for guests to build their own
  • Taco bar with all the fixings 🌮
  • Chopped salad bar with proteins, toppings, and dressings
  • Grain bowl station with a base like farro or quinoa, roasted veggies, and sauces

In addition to the classics:

  • Dessert station with cookies, brownies, and fruit 🍪
  • Drink station with a pre-made batch mocktail, garnishes, and spirit options on the side 🍹
  • Coffee station for after dinner ☕

You're not making guests serve themselves — you're giving them the gift of customization. Everyone gets exactly what they want, and nothing they don't.

🍹 The Ultimate Crowd-Pleasing Make-Your-Own Cocktail or Mocktail Formula (Works for Every Party)

Pre-make a big batch and set it out as a drink station. Guests can sip it as a mocktail or add their preferred spirit. This formula works for literally any summer gathering, any theme, any crowd.

The Formula:

  • 2 parts fruit juice or fruit puree (pick something seasonal or on-theme)
  • 1 part lemon or lime juice (whichever pairs best with your fruit)
  • 3 parts sparkling water

Set out a few liquor options (vodka, tequila, rum, gin) so guests can customize their own cocktail. Label them so everyone knows what's what!

*Note: If using a less-sweet fruit (grapefruit, pomegranate) add 1/2 part simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar, dissolved).

🥭 Summer Favorite: Mango Lime Sparkling Mocktail

Mango lime sparkling mocktail with fresh mint and lime garnish

This one is endlessly refreshing, insanely easy, and disappears fast.

Ingredients (Serves 10–12, but scales easily for a larger crowd):

  • 4 cups mango puree
  • 1 cup lime juice 🍋
  • 6 cups sparkling water
  • Ice for serving 🧊
  • Optional: lime slices and fresh mint for garnish 🌿

*To make this a batch cocktail, add 2½ cups of your favorite clear liquor.

Instructions:

  1. In a large pitcher, combine the mango puree and lime juice.
  2. Just before serving, stir in the sparkling water.
  3. Set out liquors for guests to mix in.
  4. Garnish with lime slices or fresh mint, if desired.

*For guests adding alcohol per glass — 1½ ounces is standard.

Summer hosting doesn't have to be stressful. With the right prep, the right setup, and a few great serving boards as your anchor, you can pull off a party that looks like it took way more effort than it did. (We won't tell anyone…) 🌞
